Rhys is an experienced debater who has been debating since 2016 and coaching debate professionally since 2019. He has broken at the North American Universities Debating Championship (NAUDC) three times, in 2021, 2022, and 2023, advancing to semifinals twice and finals once, and won Hart House IV 2025 as well as the inaugural Ottawa Round Robin, where he was also top speaker.
